Heritage Hunt Condominium I
Trash and Recycling
Formal trash rules appear in "Heritage Hunt Condominium
I Unit Owners Association Rules and Regulations" Section IV.F. Waste
Disposal. What follows goes into more detail to explain and clarify the
rules and procedures.

Pickup Schedule
Trash is normally picked up on Mondays and Thursdays. HOWEVER,
there will be no pickup on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year's
Day or when Fairfax County Police determine that there is a snow emergency.
On these occasions, your restraint will be appreciated. That is, put off
until another pickup or spread out putting big, or a large amount of, items
out for a single pickup.
Recycle bins are picked up once per week on Wednesday with the same exceptions
as mentioned above for trash pickup.
Under normal circumstances, nothing should
be placed on the floor of the trash rooms;
everything should go into the dumpsters.
Nothing should ever be left on the floor
in the Recycle rooms.
General Rules
Recycling
The Recycle Room is part of our home; these rules are both to meet recycling
requirements AND to maintain our home in a desirable state.
- Do not overfill bins. Bin lids must close completely. If there
is not enough room in the bins, dispose of the recyclables in the regular
trash dumpster. DO NOT PLACE overflow on the floor.
- Paper must be clean. Office paper, newspaper, junk mail, catalalogs,
phone books, cereal and cracker boxes are acceptable.
- Small pieces of cardboard and flattened, small boxes are OK.
However, cardboard so large that it must be cut or folded to fit bin should
be disposed of in the dumpsters according to the regular trash rules. We
generate sufficient other recyclables such that it is counterproductive
to fill up the Recycle Bins with large pieces of cardboard.
- The following are OK PROVIDED THEY ARE RINSED THOROUGHLY: plastic bottles
with a neck, cans, glass bottles and jars. REMOVE ALL CAPS. All containers
must be rinsed out -- INCLUDING BEER CANS. If a container won't rinse clean
-- think syrupy, sticky contents -- then put in the regular trash. We don't
need the smell of un-rinsed containers.
- If an item is not specifically listed above as acceptable, do not recycle
-- dispose of in regular trash.
- The following items are specifically NOT ACCEPTABLE for recycling:
- Plastic bags, plastic or styrofoam packaging. If you use plastic bags
to bring recyclables down to the bins, do NOT put the plastic bags into
the bins.
-
- Food packaging or anything that might have food remnants or smells
that might attract insects or rodents in the Recycle Bins. This means no
dairy or salad trays, pizza boxes, paper plates, napkins, aluminum foil,
foil pie pans, yogurt/margarine tubs and similar items.
-
- Milk or juice cardboard or wax-paper cartons.
-
- Hardcover books
-
- Light bulbs
Recycling literature is posted on all bulletin boards. Recycling and
waste disposal information in Prince William County is available at PW County web site.

Trash Chutes
- Tall 13-gallon white kitchen trash bags are recommended for trash disposal.
Anything larger is difficult to put into the trash chute. The trash bag
should be tied securely, and Unit Owners should make sure the bag drops
completely.
- Newspapers and magazines should be recycled, or if not, bagged and
disposed of in the dumpster located in the trash/compactor room of the
garage and not in the trash chutes. When loose papers are dropped into
the chutes, they can jam the compactors.
- Cardboard boxes, including pizza and shoe boxes, should not be dropped
down the chutes. Boxes must be broken down and flattened and taken to the
trash rooms in the garages and placed in the auxiliary trash dumpsters.
- No item should be placed on the floor of the trash rooms or outside
the trash rooms.
- Glass Containers Glass jars and bottles
can break when dropped down the trash chutes. If you are not going to Recycle
them, cushion glass containers in other trash in bags and deposit
in the dumpsters. NEVER
place glass bottles or jars loose in a box or bag on the floor of the trash
room. When broken glass ends up in the dumpsters, it often spills
onto the driveway when the dumpsters are emptied into the trash truck.
Broken glass is a threat to our tires and a nuisance to the Building
& Grounds committee.
Garage Trash Room
- Cardboard pieces that are too big for dumpster, should preferably be
cut into smaller pieces and then placed in dumspter; if this is not possible,
lay them flat on floor in corner of basement trash room. In any case, flatten
all cardboard boxes. Do NOT stuff large pieces or amounts of cardboard
in the Recycle Bins as this may take up space better used for other recyclables.
- Plastic peanuts, shredded packing, Styrofoam, "inflated-pouch"
type packing, and similar items should be put in trash bags and tied shut
before placing in dumpsters. Big pieces of Styrofoam should be broken
into smaller pieces. Inflated pouches should be deflated. Small, loose
items tend to spill on the driveway during the emptying of dumpsters into
the trash truck.
On occasions when the dumpsters are overwhelmed, priority should be given
to putting trash bags -- meaning especially anything that might be messy
or attract vermin -- in the dumpsters. Only on such occasions may cardboard
-- flattened and neatly stacked, of course -- be placed on the floor in
the corner of the basement trash rooms.
Moving boxes, wardrobe boxes and delivery cartons pose special problems
due to both quantity and size and can overwhelm the trash room. Please use
extra diligence in breaking these items down and placing them in the trash
room in accord with the above guidelines.
Should the basement trash room be overwhelmed, consider holding off adding
more items until after the next trash pickup. For example, suppose you buy
or receive something having a lot of cardboard, molded Styrofoam, peanuts,
etc. and you find the dumpster full, you might keep the debris in your storeroom
for a few days until after the next trash pickup.
Some items are unsuitable for disposal
through our trash pickup service.
It is the resident's responsibility to properly dispose of items such
as: Computer Monitors, Televisions, any but SMALL appliances, large Entertainment
Components, Furniture, Hazardous Items, Wheel Chairs, Etc. For such items,
contact Prince William County for disposal information, call (703) 335-8181
or online at PW
County web site. One recycling and waste disposal site it the PWC Yard
Waste Composting Facility located at 13012 Balls Ford Road, Manassas, VA
20109 (near the intersection of Balls Ford Road and Wellington Road).
Thank you for you cooperation and consideration of others.
